My rantings…

Large Hadron Collider

This is an odd post for me, something off the norm, but then again there’s not much ‘normal’ to this blog anyway right?

So the Large Hadron Collider or LHC is going to be coming on very soon, and honestly I’m a bit excited about it, I’ve always loved physics, or quantum physics to be exact, it’s those things that you can’t see but are there that interest me, and their interactions and reactions that intrigue me.

I’ve always been under the impression that there are even smaller things out there that we don’t know about, sure we can see into atoms etc, but I don’t think that’s the end of it, not at all, we as a civilization are not advanced enough to ‘see’ everything, at least that’s my take on it anyway, there’s more out there, more that will be discovered eventually and the LHC is the first step towards that I believe.

When the LHC comes online fully in about less than a years time I believe we’re going to learn quite a lot, answer many questions about physics and of course produce a whole lot more questions to be answered.

Looking at the cost of the LHC, it’s around $15Billion US dollars, which in the grand scheme of things isn’t much at all really, I mean look at the Iraq War, were talking hundreds of billions of dollars and they’re predicting over a trillion before it’s done and over…

I’m not bitching about the war, it’s more about the fact that the United States at one point was building their own LHC or our name for it was the Superconducting Super Collider or SSC, but the funding was cut and it was canceled.. Why? because our wonderful government didn’t think it was feasible, or they thought there was basically no reason for it… our politicians didn’t and still don’t understand the ramifications this could have on the scientific community overall, and specifically in physics.

It’s a shame that for the moronic wisdom of our government we are going to be basically left out of these discoveries, not really left out, but we could have been on the cutting edge of physics, our country could have been known for something other than war-mongering, obesity, and gluttony…

Now the history books will read about the LHC in Switzerland/France, when they make these discoveries, instead of the US, I guess we’ll be known for spending the most money on a war.. I guess they feel that’s something anyway.

Our priorities are not where they should be, our meaning our government, we should be thinking of advancing our knowledge, advancing our strength in science, but I guess there’s no money to be made in it so they figured why bother right? I suspect that they thought there’s no military applications for this so what’s the point?! It is a shame really what we squander our money on isn’t it?

Seriously though, there really hasn’t been any major leaps or advancements in the field of physics, it’s remained relatively stagnate for the last few decades really, it’s a shame that we, the United States, had a chance to possibly progress physics to a new level of knowledge and understanding.

If I recall correctly the SSC was canceled in 1993 by the US Governement, and in 1995 the LHC was approved for construction.. now estimating we can say it took 13 years for the LHC to be completed, now if the SSC took that long it would have been finished and online now for about 2 years, imagine what we could have learned already in those two years? In affect we could say that by cancelling the SSC we set physics back a few years really… but they had to spend their money on something else…

oh and I have to mention about these goofs out there saying that the LHC is going to create a black hole and it’s going to swallow the earth, that’s just too funny really, and yeah the earth is flat too… my favorite is the lawsuit about it, these goofs are suing to stop construction fo the LHC because of their fears, that’s truly a waste of the judical system… if it does create a black hole to swallow the earth etc, we’ll never know really, it will happen so fast that we won’t even feel it, and I doubt there would be any warning either… maybe the guys at the LHC will notice it for a split second, but there won’t be time to alert anyone.. oh well, I guess if I’m going to go that would be a painless and quick way to do it

of course not to mention the aliens out there, the instant creation of a black hole will really get their attention focused on our little corner of the galaxy anyway right?

Rant: All these Fees Suck!

So far this month I’ve racked up $28.80 in fees from Paypal for receiving payments…

we know Paypal is ridiculous with their fees… but this is adding up quickly now…

It costs me $2.50 to withdraw money from my Paypal account at an ATM, but then Paypal charge me $1 on top of that.. so it costs me $3.50 to get my own money?!?!

and I thought it was free to get money if I bought something with my Paypal card, y’know if I buy something and get cash back.. but apparently it’s not, they charge $1 for that as well…

But…

I paid my Electric Bill yesterday over the phone and it cost me $5.95

I paid my car today over the phone and it cost me $10 ?!?!

Stupid Chase Auto Finance doesn’t have an online payment system in my state.. I don’t quite understand that though, what exaclty does the state have to do with online payments?

-my last car was through Chrysler and I could easily pay them on the web every month, the fee was 50 cents but I’d take 50 cents over $10 anyday obviously..

Seriously, WTF?!  Why do I have to pay to give them my money?

I mean, you want my money, but I have to pay you to give it to you.. how does that work?!?

I wonder if all of these fees are tax deductible?

iPhone.. GACK! Things it can’t do that my Tilt can!

OK, the new iPhone is out, but damn I’m already sick of hearing about it…

Go over to Digg and you’ll see several stories about the iPhone or something related to it, and htat’s not just Digg, pretty much everywhere..

I’m sick of hearing about it already, people are acting like it’s this wonderfully amazing thing that’s going to change the world, it’s not going to, it’s a phone for f*cks sake…

Hey I love my phone, an HTC TytnII or ATT Tilt, but I’m not gloating over it.. maybe it’s time I should though… It’s a vastly superior phone even though it’s a year old now

my phone can do pretty much everything the iPhone can and it can do everything the iPhone can’t, all those things that people are complaining about and much more!

iPhone.. Blah, Gack… Go Away you bother me…

I hate people….

So last week the 9th, my wife went to pick kids up from daycare, my 2yr old son, opened the car door a bit farther than my wife had opened it and it touched the car next to ours, it left a scuff mark that could be rubbed out with your finger.. big deal right?

Not a f*cking chance, I just got a phone call from my insurance company that these people filed a claim and that there’s a huge dent in their car…

how much damage could a 2yr old do really?

The thing that bugs me the most is of coruse that I wasn’t there to see this, but what really intrigues me is that the car itself has not been there since this incident so I can’t even look to see the damage of take pictures..

The lady was rude and ignorant and sceamed at my wife, my wife came home upset and crying because of this stupid lady…

My wife says it’s an older car anyway with numerous dents and dings in it, but still though how much damage could a 2yr old do in like two feet of space between the cars…

Also what bothers me is that the lady said she was going to talk to her husband and see if he could possibly do something bout it, now I don’t think this guy is an autobody expert, so I’m suspicious that this guy may have done more damge when he tried to ‘fix’ it..

it was a scuff, you could have rubbed it off with your finger, there’s no work that was needed to fix it…

I’m tired of being nice, I’m sick of it, no one else is so why should I be right?!?

I’ve got numerous dents and dings in my car from that parking lot, the first was when my car was only two months old, I was dropping off ky kids and wasn’t even in there for 10 minutes, it’s a very large mark on my bumper where even the paint is missing, but of course  NO ONE claimed it or apologized for it….

GoDaddy Sucks.. and I need a new host.. Part two?!

Apparently someone at GoDaddy reads my blog, I got a call this afternoon from the ‘office of the president’ of GoDaddy and he referenced this blog posting.. that’s a trip isn’t it?

Well he was nice, but didn’t solve my problem, from what we gathered it could be a couple things, one is that there is a limit of 50 connections at one time to the database pulling data, there could be 200+ people on my site looking at it but only 50 can actually access the database…

Related to the DB, I also learned that there is no limit on the size of the database, I read somewhere a while ago that there was a 200mb limit on databases on GoDaddy shared hosting, but that limit was changed, too bad that they don’t mention this size anywhere on their site, maybe they should list that somewhere…

another problem could be the database itself, it was locking up for some reason, he recommended I optimize it… well I went into the backend of my site and deleted 4853 database entries, and then another 582 on top of that, I deleted old stuff from years ago, when you delete things in mambo it goes into the trash bin just like Windows, you have to go in and empty it just like Windows, well obviously I haven’t done that in a while, and considering you can only select 50 items at one time it took me a while…

so we’ll see if that lightened the DB any, going to do a backup shortly, and I know there is some other old entries in there that can be deleted as well…

but I think the real problem presently is the connections limitation and there is no way around that other than upgrading my hosting to a virtual dedicated server.. which is cost prohibitive right now..

hmm.. Hey GoDaddy.. Wanna be the official sponsor of DragonSteelMods?

hehe.. had to try..

Suicide…

I meant to post about this a couple days ago but just basically didn’t want to a the time…

July 5th was the 2nd anniversary of my cousins suicide and to this day, and probably never will I be able to figure out why he did it…

not only did he leave behind questions unanswered but he left guilt as well with most of his family and friends, I personally have to ask is there something I could have done?  is there something I missed?

We were cousins but we were friends as well, the closest thing to a best friend I’ve ever had really…

I look back and well I wasn’t always there, I mean I think I should have been there, but as we got older our interests differed and we grew apart, we went our separate ways with our familes and friends, and things we liked to do, I guess I can’t blame myself or feel guilty about it but I can’t help it really… I just think back and have to wonder what more could I have done?

The last communication I had with him was an argument, and well there’s guilt there as well, but we’ve fought many times before and always ‘made up’, time went by and things cooled off and things were back to normal, but not this time…

He ended it with a bullet to his head, he left behind three small children and a wife, well the wife really wasn’t a wife at that point, she was cheating on him at the time, and I’m sure that was a big part of why he did it, but it’s not worth taking your life over something like that, so obviously there had to be more to it that that, then again we all handle things differently and that could have been his reason, but I find it hard to believe as I know he loved his children and would do anything for them that he could…

I don’t know, and I guess I never will…

Fracking Thunderstorms…

I hate this time of the year, yeah it’s nice that it’s finally warm and all but now it’s time for Thunderstorms and power outages.

We had a nice big thunderstorm last night, power went out four times, and the kids don’t like the noise, they’re scared of it, I can’t figure out why, but I guess most kids are scared of them.

But anyway, I was upstairs last night with my 2 yr old son, comforting him, or at least trying to, an the power wnet out the first time, normally when a storm is overhead I power down my system just to be safe, but I didn’t because I was with the baby and because of it I lost my Altec Lansing speakers… I came downstairs and heard this loud buzzing sound and couldn’t figure out where it came from, well it was the speakers, they are shot… I guess I should be happy that’s all that happened, but everything was plugged into the same power strip and that’s the only thing that died. The speakers were old, not even made anymore, but they’re good quality and the sound was excellent from them, they were 2.1 speakers, meaning just two satellite speakers and a sub-woofer, but I really liked them not only because of the good sound but because the right speaker also controlled everything, bass, treble, volume, power and also a headphone jack.

Now I’m using the set from my secondary system, an OK Boston Acoustics 2.1 speaker system, I can’t turn them off, and they only have volume control on the right speaker. They sound alright, but nowhere near as good as the Altec Lansings did.. so I’m bummed
